Doug Walker started D & D Electric in 1978, when the interest rate was around 14% and inflation rate was 12.4%. To say the least, it was tough. Doug actively went out looking for work. When he got it ... he priced it himself... billed it himself ... and did the work himself. Soon, he was able to hire employees, but even then , Doug was hands on. At that point, Doug would lay out the jobs for each crew, meet with builders, give bids, do the billing, and manage the inventory. One of the keys to D & D Electrics's success was his good work ethic.
Another key to our success has been our honesty. Doug has always believed that you reap what you sow. If you sow an un-honest deed, it will come back to haunt you. If one of our employees damaged something on a job site, we would admit it and rectify the situation. If we weren't billed for something from a supply house, we would call them to give them the invoice number. We live this life to an audience of One and that One sees all.
Another key to our success has been our competitiveness. In the earlier years, our niche was track builders. We would wire custom homes, wire light commercial jobs, and do service work also, but we wired entire neighborhoods for track builders. In that market, all our employees has to be effective. We're good and fast because we had to be. We gave the builders low prices and had to work effectively to make a profit.
So D & D Electric worked 30 years in Lexington and the surrounding counties as primarily a residential electrical company. An d then came the housing bust and the economic downturn. When this happened, we were five years into a succession plan that would shift half of the company to Justin Walker. Justin is a graduate of the University of Kentucky with a bachelor's in management. He is also a master electrician, and, of course, grew up in this industry. Justin had already been pricing and running commercial jobs when the downturn occurred. He continued and expanded this work. You can see on our projects page some of the projects we completed. So now, we are effectively a residential and a commercial company. We can do both.
